A Day with Daniel Kereopa:

Follow our Travels.
10 - 18 JUNE// PORTO DE GALHINHAS// BRAZIL
ISA World Surfing Games 2000 :
Porto de Galhinhas, Brazil:  Fabio Silva Winning

The Smokefree New Zealand Surfing Team has finished 9th overall at the ISA Maresia World Surfing Games. After eight days of competition at Porto de Galinhas, in the Northeast of Brazil, the overall result is a small slip from the 8th place finish in Portugal in 1998 but satisfaction can be gained from finishing one place ahead of 1996 champion USA. Host nation Brazil, who completely dominated the event, won the team title, winning six out of seven divisions contested and scoring the most overwhelming win ever over Hawaii and defending champions Australia.

The New Zealand team will leave Porto de Galinhas on Monday afternoon for the long journey home. After stopping overnight in Rio de Janeiro they will arrive at Auckland International Airport on Aerolineas Argentinas flight AR1182 at 5.40am on Thursday, June 22nd.

"Kereopa was outstanding all week and was very unlucky not to finish higher, falling victim to the changing ocean conditions on Friday..!"

Despite the small drop in team ranking, the trip was highlighted by some brilliant performances throughout the contest. In the premier Open Men's division, Raglan's Daniel Kereopa finished 9th=, the best ever result for a New Zealander in the division. The previous best was 13th=, set by Chris Malone at the 1998 event in Portugal. Kereopa was outstanding all week and was very unlucky not to finish higher, falling victim to the changing ocean conditions on Friday.

Greg Bell continued his success at biannual event, finishing 5th. The result was the highest individual result for the Kiwis, but Bell was not satisfied, knowing he could have done better. The Dunedin surfer had twice finished in the top four previously but just missed the final heat this year by less than one point.

Additionally, the team finished best ever in the Tag Team event, beating Australia and Hawaii in the final heat but just missing out to the dominant Brazilians.
