The Steap and Cheap B-X at Coronet Peak:

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE HELPS WIN THE DAY
Local knowledge helped win the day for Queenstown riders who dominated the Steep & Cheap Boarder Cross on the final day of the Pulsate Southern Lakes Regional Championships at Coronet Peak ski area on Saturday (Aug 28).

Many riders who spent the last seven weeks competing in the Pipeline Boarder X series on the mountain took top placings in the Steep and Cheap event. It was the last chance for some of the country's top snowboarders to gain points towards a national ranking before the national champs at Cardrona in September.

Twenty-four riders lined up for an attempt at the senior men's title. After four rounds, first place went to Queenstown rider Scott Anfang, who rides for The World team that was overall winner of the Pipeline competition. In second place was The World teammate Anthony Crute, and third place went to Chris Moore. Japanese riders Tsuyoshi Iwazaki and Takayuki Ebara were fourth and fifth respectively, and Antoine Pellaud, overall individual mens winner of the Pipeline competition was sixth. In the womens event 12 riders had three rounds. First was Erin Simmons, who last week won the overall Pipeline womens title, and second and third were Queenstown riders Maggie Vaughan and Jana Gibson. Japanese rider Ayako Kawakimi was fourth.

Fifteen-year-old Wakatipu High School pupil Christa Woerlee completed a very successful Pulsate Southern Lakes Regional Champs series to win the junior women division. On Friday she was the only junior woman finalists in the B.O.A. Half Pipe, and she placed third in Thursday's giant slalom. Japanese rider Shin Biyajima was top junior man.
