TAKE A RIDE OVER THE ALPS
The Olympic Torch at Coronet :

Summer is still king.
05 JUNE// CORONET PEAK// QUEENSTOWN// NEW ZEALAND//
The Olympic Torch begins its journey on the snow:
Coronet Peak:  The Olympic Torch touches down!

Over 2000 people were at Coronet Peak ski area this morning (Mon June 5) to welcome the Olympic torch on its first ever visit to New Zealand.

Under clear blue skies and watched by national and international media, the torch 'mother flame' flew in by helicopter to make a picture perfect landing in the snow at the top of Coronet Peak. New Zealand Sportsman of the Century and triple gold medallist Peter Snell lit the first torch and handed over to Olympic silver medallist Annelise Coberger. She skied down the first section of the main M1 trail with the torch, closely followed by members of the Coronet Peak and The Remarkables ski school and Queenstown Alpine Ski Team forming an honour guard.

"One of the most special moments was when we were at the top and the clouds parted so we could see the Southern Alps covered in fresh snow received overnight."

Afterwards Annelise said it had been a real thrill to be the first to travel with the torch. "It was a real thrill when Peter handed the torch to me. It all went very smoothly, thanks to the nice groomed snow conditions, and it was neat to see so many people involved. "It was a unique experience to savour."

Ski area manager Andy Chapman said it had been a very special day for Coronet Peak. "The fresh snow, the huge crowd of people that came up to see the Olympic torch arrive, the weather, the atmosphere -- everything conspired to produce a wonderful welcome," he said. "One of the most special moments was when we were at the top and the clouds parted so we could see the Southern Alps covered in fresh snow received overnight. "Then to top it off a helicopter circled around over Coronet Peak with a huge Silver Fern flag flying behind, tugging at the patriotic heart strings."

Mr Chapman said a huge crowd gathered at the base lodge building had also given the torch an awesome welcome. The torch flew to Christchurch with Air New Zealand later in the day.
