It's hard to believe that 5 years have gone by since the inception of the NZ Open Snowboarding Championships. Through Burton's participation, the NZ Open has grown from a grassroots event to one of the world's best snowboard contests. Celebrating its 5th anniversary this year, the NZ Open attracts thousands of spectators, top riders and sponsors from all over the globe.
Coming off a very successful first season, Burton will continue to link its international Open Snowboarding competitions in the United States, Europe, Japan, New Zealand and Australia into one championship series called the Burton Global Open Series. And new this year is the exciting addition of the Canadian Open! Just like last year, the top male and female Burton Global Open Series Champions will be crowned at the 2008 US Open and awarded $100,000 each - the largest single payout in snowboarding history.
Just like Burton Snowboards, the NZ Open is rider-driven. Snowboarders are involved in every step of the event process, from determining event formats and prize money to planning the legendary late-night parties.
