Over the last week the arrival of snow has seen the masses heading to the commercial resorts. Lift queues, crowded runs, and irate skiers make for an experience far from those powder turns we have all been dreaming of over the summer months. More and more Kiwi Boarders are realising that the real fun lies off the beaten trail and the madness of the resorts. We were lucky enough to have our camera along with a team of local Queenstown riders for what was to be the first epic mission of the season. Although the backcountry can be extremely rewarding it is definitely a case of "earning your turns" and "no wimps allowed". Our crew including Rob Johnstone (local backcountry guru from N.Z Shred) ,Syd Ratcliffe and Brent the builder left Queenstown in darkness to drive to secret spot X. We have been sworn to secrecy, but can say that eventually this mission would end up at the pub in Arrowtown. The day could not have been better, with frost dried snow up to knee deep in the valleys, and not a drop of wind.
3- 5 hrs of walking (who's keeping track of time?)...... 3 bags of prunes........... potatoe chips not cooked in oil.........
Of course we have to mention, that if you are planning a hike , be safe and know what you are in for. The local Ski Patrols are always good for advice on guiding, snow conditions and all that important stuff. Take care out there!! |
