An excellent level of riding was displayed at
the Ansell Queenstown winter festival half-pipe competition
at Coronet Peak on Friday. Soft snow and a well maintained pipe
aided the predominantly local fleet of riders, who tore it up
with a feast of tasty tricks. |

Queenstown ripper Aaron Jamieson won the mens section, with his
huge McTwists, Rodeo's and harken flip's. Roland Morley-Brown came
second, charging with backside 540's, and also busting the rodeo's
and harken flips.
Toku (……) from Japan came in third. The women were also in top
form, from Queenstown Debbie O'hagen's display of frontside 540's
won her first place, with Holly Thorpe and Ukiko Kohara in second
and third, pulling solid 360's.
Head judge Mel Thomas said he was very pleased with the level
of riding displayed. "A lot of the riders are now getting into huge
switch inverts, such as Harken flips." Mr Thomas said it was also
great to see the usually smaller sections such as the skiiers and
women making their mark. "The skiiers were really ripping today,
and the girls were also going huge and pulling out some great tricks,"
he said. Mr Thomas said the level of riding was consistently improving
with every season. "The level of freestyle riding just keeps getting
bigger and better. Guys are getting 6-7 feet out of the pipe now,
whereas a few years ago most were only going 3-4 ft."
Event MC Luca Soulos said a positive and relaxed atmosphere at
the competition had been a bonus for the event. "The mellow environment
at the pipe today really helped the riders make the most of the
good conditions, and they all performed well."
The winners took away brand new Rossignol boards, and enough Ansell
condoms and lube to last a whole season of naughtiness.
