The STS NZ OPEN was an amazing day. The sky was
bluebird without a breath of wind & the ¼ pipe had
been extended to 26ft! New Zealands own SUB20 [STS] OUTERWEAR
CO.created an entirely new type of event in NZ snowboarding
possibly even international snowboarding to celebrate their

They pooled together massive industry
support, riders from all over the country, DJ's, media & the hard
work of the snowpark crew in a new exclusive freestyle environment
to hold possibly the biggest non-competetive expression session on
record. There were prizes - over $4500 worth of prizes and cash given
out randomly & on the spot for music, riding, rails, requested
tricks, handstands, crashes and sometimes for just no reason at all,
whatever to add to the festive & fun feel but with no emphasis
at all on a competetive scene - in fact the complete opposite.
The riders charged all day long, the 1.30pm finish extended to
4pm
. [with snowparks JEFF regularly tweaking the pipe up with
the groomer or by hand with his crew] as hoots, laughter, smiles
& good music rocked on.
Visiting USA pro's BRYAN IGUCHI, TRAVIS RICE & a few more registered
in and jamed all day too with the 60 plus entrants & around
200 people hanging out, filming, etc. "I don't think I've seen
so many cameras & filmers even at a nationals!" was the
call. QUENTIN ROBBINS, DYLAN BUTT, AARON JAMIESON, WILL JACKWAYS,
DENI BEVAN, ANTS LEFFLAR, JAKE KOIA, LEON ERU, TY, JAKE BARROWS,ANDY
MAC, NICK McBRIDE, ROLAND M.B.,JOEL WEB, SAM DEAVOL, SAMMY BRITTEN,
SHARON PARKER,PAULA MITCHELL, DEB O'HAGAN, ABBY LOCKHART, JANA GIBSON,
HANA SULLIVAN
etc etc the list goes on & on -
everyone deserves a mention and a pat on the back just for riding
that monster, even a few freestyle skiiers registered and threw
down with everyone else, the great thing was it did'nt matter if
you were a seasoned pro or a home grown jibber it was'nt about that
- it was all about the day, fun, having a crack with likeminded
friends & a wicked atmosphere.
NARLS ran the decks & rhymed like a legend pumping out the
tunes & getting everyone up for a scratch off & rhyme off.
AJ[AARON JAMIESON] mixed and scratched a up a storm inbetween riding
& the two jamed a lot of the day away, DENI BEVAN was up there
with his records as was SERINA ENGLAND on the scratch, JAKE KOIA,
SAM, ANTS LEFLAR & many more some for the first time in public
busting out the rhymes etc - it was so good to see the riders up
there getting right into it - and they were bloody good!!
It seemed that simultaneously around 5 DIFFERENT AREAS all in close
proximity had crews amping whether it was on the different rails,
the snowskate park, the DJ BOX [2 storeyed] or the ¼ pipe
& all set just below the two massive superpipes almost ready
to be cranked up.
SUB20's LUCA SOULOS mc'd the whole event getting a few hits in
the ¼ late in the piece while the other half of STS: DEB
O'HAGAN threw down cripplers on the great wall & shot out prizes
& cash making up instant catagories in the spirit of it all.
" this is what it's all about, we're so stoked to see everyone
up here riding together, amping, hanging out & having a ball,
even some of the photographers have put their camereas down to slide
the rails or hit the pipe and join in - they've even scored some
prizes! Niether of us can get the grin off our faces & that's
because everyone else is smiling & stoked as well, SAM LEE,
DENI & the snowpark crew have been amazing - this place is incredible!!!
- we've got plenty more good times to follow this day; that's for
sure!!!! say's Luca.
All in all if you were there this was one of the great days, if
not ,to know that it went down the way it did should make you feel
proud of NZ snowboarding.
