The country's best snowboard talent took on the Coronet Peak #1 Halfpipe today in the first event of the 2002 Boost Mobile New Zealand Snowboard Nationals. The field of over 80 riders was competing for the coveted title of national champion and competition was fierce.

"There was a lot of fluid air and stomped landings today," said Ewan Straight, New Zealand Snowboarding Association (NZSBA) president and technical director. "The juniors were boosting bigger than ever before taking the standard of competition to the next level. They were just as exciting to watch as the seniors."

Kendall Brown (13) of Mt Manganui took first in the junior women's, streaks ahead of her nearest rival, 17 year old Divinia Birdsall from Wanaka. Ellie Richards (14) from New Plymouth took third. Kendall appeared on the podium a second time with her brother, Mitchell as they took the female and male youth titles respectively.

Wanaka's Clayton Barker (17) pulled out some new tricks for the competition and performed them superbly, taking first in the junior men's. Behind him was Mitchell Brown (15) from Mt Manganui, followed by Joel Webb (17) from Queenstown and member of the nzski.com Freeride Team.

The senior competition offered some spectacular riding with Juliane Bray comfortably taking first place in the women's for her strong, technical and consistent performance. Lee O'Connor from Wellington took second with Yukiko Kohara of Japan in third.

The men's competition was once again ruled by Aaron Jamieson of Queenstown but it was a very tight contest with Japan's Tomoda Keiichiro just 0.1 of a point behind him. Both riders impressed the judges and the 100-strong crowd with their massive air and consistent riding. Will Jackways of Wanaka took third.

The Nationals continue tomorrow (31 August) at The Remarkables with the 540s Boarder-X and conclude on Sunday with the Groovestar Slopestyle, also at The Remarkables.
