| Over 70 competitors took part in the
540s Boarder-X on The Remarkables specially built new course, negotiating
the terrain at high speed, four at a time, resulting in some spectacular
racing and impressive spills.
Champion of the day was Itaru Chimura from Japan who was unbeaten
in all his heats and took first place in the senior men's final.
Close behind him was Hisanori Katsuyama, also of Japan in second.
Adam Dyck of Mt Manganui was the highest placed New Zealander in
third with Tom Wilmott of Great Britain in fourth.
The junior men's event was a very close run race with Queenstown's
Joel Webb leading until the last set of rollers when Wanaka's Andy
Clark, who had been hot on his heels throughout the race, managed
to overtake into first place. Clayton Barker of Wanaka was close
behind in third with Elliot Corleison of Wanaka in fourth.
Queenstown's Woerlee sisters, Laura and Christa, battled it out
in the junior women's final with Laura crossing the finishing line
just ahead of her older sister. Fabienne Breitenmoser from Canada
took third with Jana McLeod, also of Queenstown, in fourth.
The senior women's was an international affair and was also a close
run event. Queenstown's Jana Gibson had won all her heats but was
pipped to the post by Canada's Erin Simmons in the final. Juliane
Bray from Wanaka took third with Zuzana Vojtechova from the Czech
Republic in fourth.
New Zealand Snowboard Association president, Ewan Straight, was
impressed with the level of competition.
"All the finals were as close as they could have been. When
you consider they're racing for 45 seconds through difficult terrain
and they're still bunched at the end you can see how closely matched
the finalists were. "
The action continues at The Remarkables tomorrow with the final
event of the Nationals, the Groovestar Slopestyle. It is the first
time the slopestyle has been part of the nationals for five years
and promises provide both spectators and competitors alike with
some superb rail and big air action.
