    14July 2001 - THE QUEENSTOWN WINTER FESTIVAL 2001
Earnslaw Park. Queenstown New Zealand

I arrived in Queenstown for a season boarding under a week ago, and to my delight I have stumbled across the renowned Queenstown winter festival.

The crowd gathered together as the sun set pink on the towering Remarkables across the lake. Mellow beats floated across the park as children with balloons and painted faces frolicked and hands were warmed around braziers and mulled wine. By 6.00 pm the park was packed with people and buzzing with energy; the food stalls were cranking, smells of Indian curry, Thai noodles, sushi, chicken wraps and Continental Cup'a'Soup fringing the air.

The Grand Central band from Auckland brought the party into full swing with their jiving beats and soothing vocals, with covers from the Beatles and upbeat originals the four piece kept many woolly hats bopping and feet tapping. Through a crowd of delighted and smiling faces brilliant orange sparkling creatures on stilts weaved and flapped their huge shiny wings. The opening came to a climax as faces turned skyward to watch the American express fireworks display over the lake.

Choreographed to powerful orchestral music, the sky lit up with brilliant showers of colour and sound, to mark the beginning of the Queenstown winter festival 2001. To fresh eyes the opening party had a very happy and relaxed feel to it, with people from all ages, Queenstown locals and travellers from all around hanging out together and celebrating the vibe of Aotearoa's funkiest ski town. And there is still so much more to come!!!!

There is a wide variety of events to check out happening every day of the festival, if you're up for some more boogying, check out the Mardi Gras this Tuesday from
6-10pm on Rees and Beech St. Pick up a programme and have some fun! Watch this space for updates on festival madness throughout the week……..
