The crowd and the riders went crazy today
in what veterem competitor Luca Soulos described as the "Best
Nationals Pipe competition ever!" The airs, inverts, spins and
tricks were all at mach 10 and huge out of the pipe.
The riders and spectators alike amped each other with calls, roars and snowballs under the crystal blue sky and spring temperatures. All of course to the beats of the live DJ and pumping tunes. Luca saying it " was a huge stoke to be there and a privilege to ride.
Obvious stand outs of the day were Aaron Jamieson and Dylan Butt soaring
way up above the crowd. The standard of their riding was intense and
made for some extremely difficult judging.
The high level of riding
filtering down through everyone. Huge airs from Will Jackways, Crispins
big grabs, Glen Howes last invert..everyone had a huge day. “We had
a very strong turn out today,” said Judge Ste’en Webster. “The level
of riding was excellent in all groups with the top riders consistently
putting together great runs.”
Young Mitch Brown flew, the junior riders all charged as did the women
riders with some outstanding inverts.
Close behind Dylan Butt in second place was Aaron Jamieson, also from
Queenstown. “He just went right off the Richter Scale!” exclaimed
Graham Dunbar, NZSBA president. “ His first run in the final was amazing
– easily the biggest of the day.” Suzy Parker from Wanaka is the NZ
Women’s Half Pipe Champion after coming second behind Jennifer Jones
from Great Britain. Junior Champions are Michaela Sanders from Dunedin
and Mitchell Brown from Mount Manganui.
