Asami Hashimoto (JAP) is leading the field
in the mens and Nobuko Okamoto (JAP) in the womens after
the first day of the Boost New Zealand Snowboard
Nationals at Cardrona Alpine Resort. The day kicked off with the giant
slalom race and a field of over 70 riders from around the world. Qualification
runs
were against the clock but the finals whittled the field down in nail-biting
duel elimination rounds New Zealands first ever parallel
giant slalom.
Senior Mens runner up was Rene Brunner from Austria and third
place went to Yoshitatsu Hanzaki (JAP) while in the womens,
Jess Mortimer from Auckland
came second and Casey Gosper (AUS) received third.
The Juniors results showed a promising future for New Zealand
snowboarding with Kiwis taking second, third and fourth in both the
mens and womens.
Australian, Kenneth Timms won the junior mens while Stephanie
Hickey, also from Australia came first in the womens
“We’ve added a whole new dimension to alpine racing today where the competitors were not just racing against the clock but also against each other. We
saw some world class racing in this event and it was a fantastic start to this year’s nationals,” said Graham Dunbar, president of New Zealand Snowboard
