In the final heat, it was neck and
neck between Howe and fellow Aucklander, Steve Scott with neither
willing to give an inch or reduce their breakneck speed. With Scott
just in the lead for most of the
course the final jump saw them both crash with Howe recovering the
quickest to cross the finish line if first place. Brent Kroecker (CAN)
and Tom Willmot (GBR) came
second and third respectively.
The Womens final was more clear-cut with Rene Hollis from Queenstown
holding her lead throughout the competition. She was the fastest qualifier
and took this speed
right through to the finals. Yuko Omaki (JPN) was next across the
line with Jana Gibson (NZE) and Kaori Mitsui (JPN) in third and fourth.
Andy Clark from Wanaka took the Junior Men’s title ahead of Joel Webb and the Woerlee sisters from Queenstown battled it out for the Junior Women’s title with Christa
coming out top. Younger sister Laura had to make do with second place.
“This was the best boarder cross course we’ve ever had in the Nationals,” said Ewan Straight, NZSBA technical director. “It was challenging and intense which led to the
positive charged atmosphere surrounding the event. You only had to listen to the reaction of the spectators to hear the excitement it was generating.”
Also announced today were the overall National Champions of the Boost National Snowboard Championships. Jah Harris of Wanaka takes the title of New Zealand Overall
Champion in the men’s while Suzy Parker, also from Wanaka, is the New Zealand Overall Women’s Champion. Clayton Barker from Dunedin and Laura Woerlee from
Queenstown take the Junior titles. |
