The K2 Snowboard Challenge in the Moro Monster Halfpipe
attracted a full field of 90 competitors from all over
the world. An uncertain start due to high wind did nothing
to dampen spirits and the competition kicked off with
some fine opening runs from the juniors followed by
impressive pipe action from the men's and women's opens.
"As usual, the riders really pushed their limits,"
said Ste'en Webster, head judge. "The standard
just got better and better throughout the day with the
finals offering some spectacular riding."
The rider of the day was Takahiko Sahara from Japan,
winner of the Men's Open, who stunned both the judges
and the spectators with huge air out of the pipe, consistently
fluid runs and spectacular tricks. Close behind him
was last year's winner Aaron Jamieson from Queenstown
and Keiichiro Tomoda from Japan who tied for second
place. It was a close run competition with just 0.4
points between the top two placings, illustrating all
three riders' extreme skill in the pipe.
Japan also did well in the Women's Open with Yayoi
Tamura streaks ahead of the rest of the field with her
smooth style and gutsy moves. Chiyoko Imabuchi took
second place and Suzy Parker from Wanaka winning third.
In the Junior Men, top place went to Anthony Leffellar from Christchurch, with Mitchel Brown from Wanaka hot on his heels just 0.5 points behind him. Junior Girls were also a close run competition with Michaella Sanders from Dunedin just nipping in front of Wanaka rider, Katie King by 0.4 points.
