14July 2001 - Burton/ Vodafone Jam
Invitational Event
Cardrona.
New Zealand
The Jam..A unique freestyle event occured
at Cardrona today. 35 of New Zealands elite snowboarders
performing in a non competitive freestyle jam session...
Pioneered by the crew at Burton, this invitational
event has become an icon on the N.Z snowboarding calendar.
This year it has the honour of been the first snowboarding
event of the Southern Hemisphere winter. Also the first
day of operation for Cardrona's massive international
Half Pipe.
Thirtyfive of N.Z's elite snowboarders were given the
opportunity to perform in a non competitive environment..riding
for themselves and the love of it. It's a free flow
format where riders just session the Pipe at their own
pace..just one big Jam session. The pumping sounds of
DJ Downtown Brown rocked the crowd..a damn good afternoon
of premium quality snowboarding.
For everyone it is the first chance to ride together
after a long summer, all these guys chasing the Northern
Hemisphere snow and competing all over the world. It's
our first chance to see the how the crew is riding after
months on the snow overseas. Right away it was easy
to see that the level of riding in New Zealand has reached
a whole new level.
New Zealands best certainly showed they have been riding
hard all summer. Deni Bevin, Dylan Butt, Quentin Robbins
all showing their class. The women showing they are right
up there with Ju Bray and Suzy Parker leading the charge.
Standout performance of the day has to go to brothers
Will and Tim Jackways of Wanaka who have elevated their
riding to that of N.Z's best and will certainly be ones to keep a close eye on over the season.
The crew at Cardrona had the Pipe in perfect condition allowing riders to push each other higher and higher each run.
Thanks goes out to Cardrona for their efforts
and to Quest firing up the Barbeque and feeding the masses.
What a wicked start to the season..all we need now is
snow and we will be away!
