February, 2000 Breckenridge, Colorado
thankful for my helmet, without which I would probably no longer exist:
We departed Steamboat with rumours of a major storm brewing. By the time we got to the top of Rabbit Ears Pass, half an hour down the road, light snow was falling. Two hours later as we drove in to Breckenridge it was dumping, and by the look of the foot of fresh on the road side it had been for a while. We hooked up with friends Brett and Ally, who put us in a chalet under the care of a couple of crazy poms. Straight out on the town to meet the locals and check out Brett and Ally's band, On Tap. Meanwhile outside it just kept on snowing.

It goes without saying that the next morning everyone was a little excited. I met up with Brett, and Hurricane and Paulie (the crazy poms) for a guided mission around Breckenridge. First run we charged through a well maintained park and pipe, what better way for a warm up. Then it was straight to the top of Peak 8 for a massive powder run down through the glades. Powder and trees for the rest of the day and then that snow rolled in again. Breckenridge consists of three peaks side by side with over 2000 acres of terrain. Base elevation is 2900m and summit is 3900m. Average yearly snowfall is 8 metres and I was in the middle of some of the best of it! Day two I spent the morning checking out peak 10 which gave access to some awesome stashes in the far South Side. I then took the run through The Burn. Well spaced trees and freaky stumps and dead trunks, surreal in the white out. Met up with the crew again for an afternoon of charging. Unfortunately the afternoon ended for me on a not so good note. Fairly serious rag doll through a rock garden coming to a holt via my board, butt and head. Staggered down the mountain and spent the next two days horizontal. Very thankful for my helmet, without which I would probably no longer exist, wishing I had been wearing some padded shorts and bummed to miss 2 more epic days at Breck. Thanks to all in Breckenridge. Especially Hurricane and Paulie for the plush accomodation and food, and ULLR for the unbeatable snow!
