Boarding for Breast Cancer Celebrates the 6th Annual Event Burlington, VT,USA (April 18, 2001).
For the sixth straight year,
Sierra-At-Tahoe Resort, CA, hosted The 6th Annual Boarding For Breast Cancer
(BBC) Snowboard + Music Festival on Saturday, April 14, 2001, and the event
was a huge success raising over $135,000 in ticket sales.
With temperatures in the mid-sixties (F), blue bird skies, and excellent
spring riding conditions, this year’s event drew a sell-out crowd of more
than 6,000 energized spectators – the largest crowd in BBC history! The
perfect weather conditions and strong band line-up helped raise over
$135,000 in ticket sales.
Event emcee Sal Masekela did a great job entertaining the crowd between live
sets from an eclectic band line-up. Taking the stage first, Grand Theft
Audio’s metal meets electronica flavor definitely got the crowd moving. The
beats kept flowing as Stereomud filled the venue with their heavy, organic
rock sound. DJ Z-Trip took the stage next, and wowed event attendees by
mixing and blending old-school eighties hip hop with classic rock, metal,
and other atypical beats. The Kotton Mouth Kings drove the crowd into a
frenzied state when they hit the stage, and techno-metal 2000 Ozzfest alums,
Static-X, kept the crowd’s adrenaline pumping with their aggressive sound
and energized performance. Headliner, Linkin Park, played an excellent set,
and their solid performance was the perfect close to this year’s event.

In addition to great live music, BBC’s event attendees were also treated to
snowboarding exhibitions by top male and female professional athletes. New
to this year’s event were two invite-only jam sessions for the pros to throw
down their best tricks. In the Men’s and Women’s VIP Halfpipe Jam, top
honors went to Brian Richardson and Holly Lyons. In the VIP Terrain
Park/Handrail Jam, Jason Wardell took it home for the men, and Hana Beaman
for the women. Additionally, the Pro Halfpipe Jam saw top recognition go to
David Bourroguant and Alexis Waite and, in the Amateur Halfpipe Jam, Lane
Knaack rode the strongest for the men, and Paige Warner for the women.
The 6th Annual BBC Snowboard + Music Festival featured the largest breast
cancer educational center in BBC history. Located in the heart of the event’
s tent city, the BBC message was brought to life by numerous breast cancer
awareness and education exhibits. Certified nurses were on hand at the
Festival’s clinic station instructing both men and women on how to give a
self-breast exam. W.I.G (Women In General) featured the “Birth of the BBC
Story” by Monica Steward, and Julianne Buescher’s extraordinary documentary
about her battle with the disease entitled, “Resculpting of Venus: A Comedy
About Breast Cancer.” The Modart artist collective engaged spectators in
expressing breast cancer awareness through painting plaster breast molds.
The Reno Breast Center, The Breast Cancer Action Group, and Tahoe’s Barton
Memorial Hospital were also on-site to help educate and raise breast cancer
awareness. The “BBC Passport” led event attendees to these educational
exhibits, and was a great way to get everyone involved in the cause.
This season also saw Boarding For Breast Cancer’s Board-A-Thon (BAT) program
raise over $32,000 for the cause. BBC’s BAT program is a six-event tour that
lands at premier resorts across the country, beginning in December and
wrapping up in late-April. The last BAT of the 2001 season is on April 28,
2001, at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon.
Since its inception in 1996, Boarding For Breast Cancer has raised over
$600,000 for the cause through its events and programs. The money raised
benefits various national and regional breast cancer research and education
programs, as well as the BBC Foundation’s own youth-focused educational
programs.
