Boarder X Action from Cardrona N.Z
17th September 1999
A perfect day was the setting for the final event of the Pulsate Quiksilver
Boardriderz at Cardrona Alpine Resort today. The three-day surf and snow
event seeks to identify the best crossover competitor.
The strong Australian contingent is coming up to Wanaka from Dunedin with
the top two places in the men's surfing section. In the women's it was
young Wanaka based snowboarder Jess Mortimer who had taken the surf title.
The Boardercross course at Cardrona was long and fast. Racetrack commentary
was provided by The Jedai from the top much to the amusement of the many
skiers and boarders riding above the course on MacDougall's Quad chair.
"The colorful course, music and commentary gave the entire day a very
festive atmosphere" according to Cardrona Operations manager Shaun
Gilbertson.
In the Under 18 men's Jah Harris took off out of the start gate and lead for
the entire race. Chasing him hard was Felix Dixon . The combined result
ended up in a three-way tie for first between Jah, Felix and Danny Carse,
all of Dunedin. On count back it was decided that Felix took first in the
overall with Danny and Jah sharing second place. In the Under 16 juniors
young Llewellyn Thomas was a deserved winner. Forcing his way into the
older Under 18 years Boardercross final.
In the women's it was the hot riding of Regi Starinskas , Australia, which
owned the day. Of the final four only one, Jana Gibson , Queenstown, was a
New Zealander. Mandy Wood of Jindabyne, Australia was the only women's
competitor to make the final of both surf and snow. However needing second
or better to take the overall she could only manage third and the title will
go to Jess Mortimer of Wanaka.
In the men's final three time overall winner Luke Fitcher and fellow
Australian Jason Haynes lined up against Kiwi's Stephen Scott and Ste'en
Webster. Coming out of the start gate close together it was Luke to the
first corner with Stephen Scott right behind. "I knew I just had to hold on
and ride fast to the finish" according to Luke. "It wasn't as easy as it
sounds with Stephen breathing down my neck just waiting for a mistake," he
added. With that win Luke can take home his fourth New Zealand Boardriderz
title in four years. In second Manu Schaffer , Canterbury, thirdSte'en
Webster , Auckland and in fourth Marcus Stocker , Australia.
