The Biggest Snow Storm in the History of Mt Hutt , August 19th
What a Storm! Areas of North and South Canterbury almost disaster zones. Torrential rain causing major flooding and road closures. Ski resorts meanwhile rejoicing at the massive snowfalls the weather system has dumped in the mountains.

Mt Hutt Resort Manager Simon Cawley going so far as to say it is the biggest single snowfall in the history of the ski area. In a period of 60 hours the field recieved a record 1.8 meters of snow with massive 5 meter snow drifts engulfing the base lodge facilities.

Through out Friday and Saturday resort staff worked around the clock to clear the massive snowdrifts from the access road and chairlifts. Sunday dawned clear and calm with the masses eager to get amongst the snow. Patrol declared the mountain safe after assessing the snow stability as surprisingly good.

"An Epic day with 1.8m in one hit and cool that it was all so accessible..patrol threw a few bombs around but declared it Sweet.!"

For those lucky enough to be at Mt Hutt on Sunday it could only be described as epic with silky smooth snow everywhere. The whole mountain was ridable with many huge airs the order of the day.

Although Mt Hutt has the boasting rights for the biggest dump they were not alone. At least one meter of snow fell at all the Canterbury resorts, as far South as Ohau and Mt Dobson reacieving over a meter. Meanwhile the bigger fields around Wanaka and Queenstown still picked up a respectable 30-40cm. This dump has come as a God send with all resorts now set up for great skiing and boarding after what has been a lean last few months.. SO get out there ..it's as good as it gets!!

Sunday night also the Big Air event down in town...one huge party as the snow celebration went into the night.. Stay tuned for coverage..once again Aaron Jamieson taking home the prize money in a season that sees him unstoppable!!
