Sept 19th '99: Spring Festival at the Remarkables
Any Excuse to get Naked Air!
A cowboy on a horse, a flying emu, Austin Powers, a windsurfer, clowns, bananas in pyjamas and even two people on a couch were some of the wackier entries in the hilarious Columbia Splash for Cash on the final day of the American Express Queenstown Spring Carnival today (Sept 19).
A huge field of adults and youngsters hurled themselves down a slope and into an icy pool at The Remarkables ski area all in the name of fun.
Some spectacular costumes and equally spectacular jumps kept the crowd entertained, although some of the biggest cheers were reserved for those whose jumps didn't go so well.
As Austin Powers, Antoine Pellaud got some huge air on a complete forward flip to win the open division prize for technicality and the Sofa Surfers won the top prize for originality. The crowd cheered hard as two beer-swilling members of The Remarkables maintenance crew, spending a peaceful Sunday afternoon reading the newspaper on a couch, were pushed over the edge. Flying emu Andrew Wylie performed a perfect crowd-pleasing backflip to take out the top prizes for originality and technicality in the junior division, with strong competition from Trent Potts who also performed a back flip.
On Saturday competitors and spectators enjoyed some great events.
An international field of forty-five snowboarders braved the Sub 20 Big Air, getting some huge air off a specially built jump and treating spectators to a wide range of aerial manoeuvres.
Once again Queenstown rider Aaron Jamieson, sponsored by nzski.com, demonstrated the style with which he won the Methven Big Air to easily take the title from Barnaby Newton and Steve Ferguson. One of the judges even awarded Jamieson a perfect ten on his second run in the final. Debbie O'Hagan won the womens event.
