Saturday 7th August: The Wanaka Downtown Big Air :
Local win delights huge crowd at the Big Air:
USA judge Cisco tells it like it is:
Queenstown snowboarder Sam Deavoll gave 6000 people good reason to celebrate on Saturday night when he beat some of the world's best to win New Zealands biggest snow event.
The record breaking crowd maintained Wanaka's reputation for staging a spectacular winter street party.
All eyes were on the 21 yr old Coronet Peak instructor, as he
spun an incredible "frontside 900" with a stomped landing. This was enough to fend off Australian Grant Quinn who placed 2nd by a tenth of a point, followed by Andre Spinelli, of Alaska, in third place. All riders amazed the crowd with skilled display of wicked airs.
As the sun set and the temperature dropped, both competitors and the massive crowd turned up the heat for a mega party.
Ste'en Webster on what the judges want!
Top bands Unleaded(N.Z) and Grinspoon(Aussie) pumped out the tunes, as 32 of the worlds best free riders launched off the 19m-high, 50m-long purpose built ramp.
Wanaka based rider Julianne Bray made it a N.Z sweep by winning the women's section well clear of Sasha Ryzy(Aussie) and American Jewels Larsen.
