Sept 8th '99: 540's National Boarder-X Champs
DAY ONE N.Z SNOWBOARD CHAMPS 1999
540's Boardercross - the snow-based equivalent of motorcross, with competitors racing together in heats of 4 with the first two riders advancing on a challenging course consisting of a series of bumps, jumps, berms and whoop-de-do's, competition was tough. The whole field was time-trialed with knock-outs, and a start list of 32 for the Senior Men, 24 for the Senior Women was the result. The format consisted.

In the Senior Men's event, defending champion and pre-race favourite Steve Scott was eliminated early leaving the field wide open. After the fiercely contested heats, and semi's, the scene was set for the final. The Four finalists were Tomoki Goto (JPN) Richard Hunt and Jonathan Kidd (Wanaka), and Glen Howe (Queenstown) with Japanese rider Tomoki coming out on top, followed by Richard Hunt who takes out the New Zealand Boardercross title.

The Senior Womens event progressed according to pre-race predictions with local favourites Suzy Parker (Wanaka) and Rene Hollis, Erin Simmons and defending champion Jana Gibson (Queenstown) progressing through the elimination heats to a power packed all New Zealand final. In a close finish Rene Hollis lead the pack to the finish with Erin Simmons and Suzy Parker following behind.

In the Junior Men's and Junior Women's categories, up and coming talents of New Zealand Snowboarding were shown. The results confirmed that the future of New Zealand Snowboarding is in good hands with Will Jackways taking out the Junior Men's event ahead of Joel Webb and Jah Harris. Katie King won the Junior Women, ahead of Christa Woerlee and Sita Wills.
