New Zealand Win on World Qualifying Series:

August 16: Cavaliers beach, Anglet, France:

Maz Quinn, of Gisborne, has won the USD $60,000 O'Neill Surf Challenge 4-star World Qualifying Series (WQS) event. The event was held at Cavaliers beach in Anglet, France in small conditions over the past week but was blessed with high-quality 1-2m conditions for the final day. Raglan's Daniel Kereopa also performed well, placing 5th= to complete a career-best result for both New Zealanders.

The result is the first victory on the WQS by a New Zealander and leaves Quinn well placed to qualify for the World Championship Tour (WCT) in 2000. The top 20 surfers from the WQS qualify for the WCT next year, taken from the best eight results of 1999. The 1500 points for first place will jump Quinn up the ratings from 69th and should go a long way towards a possible top-20 finish to the year.

On his way to victory, 23 year-old Quinn beat an impressive field of professional surfers, most notably 3-time world champion Tom Curren (USA) in the semi-final round. Surfing against three Americans in the final, the New Zealander made the most of the conditions to take victory from Todd Prestage. Cory Lopez and former world number two, Rob Machado placed third and fourth respectively.

Quinn, who won USD $6000 for the victory, was cheered on by a supporting crowd of Australasian surfers that was happy to see a New Zealander win over the three Americans in the final.
