9th August 1999:
Inter-secondary schools snowboard championships:

A perfect day greeted 110 regional high school students in the Cheapskates Otago/Southland Inter secondary schools champs at Cardrona today.

The number of participants and the level of riding was much higher than previous years and it appears the event has truly come of age.

The two local colleges, Mt Aspiring and Wakitipu, dominated the Boarder Cross in the morning. The mens winner was local favourite Jacob Barrow. Wakitipu High students Nick Black, James Fleming and Joel Webb filled the other 3 places in the final.

After a furious two and a half hours of Boardercoss it was on to the dual slalom course. Christa woerlee was really on form with a second win. But in the boy's it was a different crew lining the podium. In first this time was Jah Harris, Mt Aspiring, followed by two exchange students. Marito Isa, Mt Aspiring and Daisuke Fukuda, Wakitipu High.

In the teams event Mt Aspiring girls who were captained by Katy King edged out St Hildas. In the mixed teams section James Hargest managed to just pip Mt Aspiring. And in the boys section Wakitipu High 1 came out clear winners ahead of Mt Aspiring 1.
