Day one of the NZ snowboarding champs at Cardrona Alpine Resort today was
the Giant Slalom. In clear sunny weather the top
riders in NZ had a brilliant day of high speed alpine racing.
Snow conditions were perfect with Cardrona boasting the best conditions of the season so far. Well over 100 competitors entered and
contested the National G.S title over two timed runs. "Definitely a very competitive group
of racers going very fast" said organiser Ewan Straight.
Both runs were held off the top of the double chair with many riders wearing lycra speed suits and big boards been the order of the day.
The womens section was tightly contested with a creditable performance by N.Z Olympian Pam Bell coming in third place wearing soft boots instead of the normal racing hard boot set up..
The mens section showed a notable lack of some of our previous top racers and opened the way for some new faces..
Several riders, including todays winner Greg Prouse were able to pull fast runs out of the bag. Thomas Jones in his first G.S run since last nationals showed great form and managed to pull off 3rd place much to his delight..
