Spectacular Action in 540s Boardercross..
25-year-old Aucklander Stephen Scott secured the top spot in the 540s Boardercross in today's event of the 1998 Sony New Zealand Snowboard National Championships. The second and third placings were taken by Christchurch men Quentin Robbins and Trevor Ponting respectively.
Jana Gibson from Great Barrier Island was the first woman home, closely followed by Wanaka's Juliane Bray.
Wanaka teenagers dominated the juniors' event with Tim Jackways and Haidee Mayen, both of Wanaka, taking first place in the junior mens' and womens' divisions.
More than 120 competitors enjoyed sunny weather and perfect snow conditions while the massive jumps, banked corners and famous Cardrona tunnels in the 540s course provided exciting action as competitors left the gates four at once and jostled for the lead position.
Ewan Straight of the New Zealand Snowboard Association says the standard of riding was superb.
"The course was extremely difficult and there were some very exciting moments as riders jostled passed each other at high speeds. The competitive level was of international standard as riders displayed superb control and a totally professional approach while still having a lot of fun."
The 1998 Sony New Zealand Snowboard National Championships continue tomorrow (Wednesday, September 2) as prequalified entrants perform breathtaking manoeuvers in the Northwave Halfpipe.
