  • Winter Festival Big Air at Coronet Peak Queenstown
    Sunday July 26th 1998:

The Winter Festival has been pumping all week, and as the Grand Finale at Coronet Peak, boarders with the balls get to hurl themselves off a huge jump in front of the base lodge.

The event was sheduled as an after dark affair and a huge crowd gathered to party and be entertained by some of N.Z's top riders..

Once again an awesome job was done by the Coronet race crew to create a Big Air jump with limited snow.
After initial training runs the punters were weeded out,and each competitor got 2 attempts to impress both the crowd and the judges.

The judges then had the difficult task of choosing the top 6 to go through to the finals. The final format was one jump each in a do or die for the prizes..and man was it close.
Deni Bevan scored high with a super smooth Rodeo Flip that had the crowd roaring. It then came down to the last competitior Olly Burke from Wanaka who executed the same maneouver and won the event with slightly more airtime and a perfect landing.

Whats more...it was his 21st birthday!
