AMERICAN CLEAN SWEEP IN 1/2 PIPE FINALS OF AUSTRALIAN OPENSun 4th September 2005
Sunday saw a perfect pipe, super sunny skies and an amazing set up for the first Australian Open of Snowboarding Half Pipe finals.
With the sun out in force early it was agreed during the riders brief to condense all riders into one large semi final before the sun turned the pipe into a slush pit. From the semi finals the top 16 men and 6 women would then move through to two run final with the highest single run taking home the cash.
With a large crowd the riders began to throw down for the semi final runs - clean nines by most riders, Ross Powers throwing 1080's and Louie Vito getting inverted and nailing almost tricks switch - it was definitely the best standard of half pipe riding we have seen in Australia.
Moving into the men's final the level was lifted with a all riders putting all on the line - Danny Davis put down a flawless run with a heap of amplitude on all hits, a nice big method and back to back nines, he was surly the guy to beat. Ross Powers made it look all too easy with his smooth lines and casual easy that makes him an amazing rider to watch. Louie Vito flew through that pipe nailing an almost perfect run. With the wait between the runs it was clean that the judges were putting a lot of effort into scoring these guys - It was a hard job to split the pack.
In the end it was Louie Vito that took the cake, but only just in front (0.1 pts) of Danny Davis who has finished with four seconds from both the NZ Open and Australian Open, Surely the most consistent rider between the two events.
Ross the boss Powers came in third and took home some cash for his riding, Little Luke Mitrani came in at forth place will some great riding and an amazing amount of hight for his little stature - defiantly one to look out for in the coming years - the kid will be huge.
The highest placed Aussie, Ben Mates just snuck into the money placing on a countback with Wyatt Caldwell, both riders scored equal for there first run, but bens consistent riding with his second got him into the placings.
In the Womens American wonder girl Elena Hight again took first place adding to her first place and $4000AU prize in the Women's Slopestyle. Elena through down consistent runs with nice straight airs mixed up with a5's and a switch 3..
Coming in second was Swiss girl Miriam Marbach, Miriam really surprised all with her riding and really helped lift the girls performance right across the Open events. Having international girls riding in Australia is great for the sport as it shows just how good girls can ride and boy this girl can ride. In third place was another international Girl Akiko Miwa who came in at third place with a super fast and smooth run through the entire pipe.
Well it was a great event, stoked we have an Open under our belt and we are all in planning to makes next years Open bigger and better than this years. See you next year.
