Downtown Queenstown was treated to a night of
street rail domination in the form of the inaugural NZSKI.COM
STREET JAM INVITATIONAL. Four truck loads of snow were
brought down from the Remarkables and dumped on Camp St in front

A purpose built 'stair feature' was in place which included, a
flat to down ledge, a straight down flat rail and a banked c-box.
Scaffolders were hard at work building the drop-in tower and after
about three hours of shoveling the run-in and with many Redbulls
consumed, the battle was ready to get underway.
As this was an 'invitational' places were limited to 60 competitors
in total which included both skiers and snowboarders. The format
was very relaxed, with three qualifying sessions of 15 riders all
jamming for half an hour on any of the rails, there were no scores
given by the judges and no rider ranking, instead only the best
tricks were recorded in each session with four riders progressing
to the 12 man final. Both the skiers and girls had the whole 1.5
hours to impress the judges with three making it to the final round.
The finals saw all the usual suspects getting through, Steve Ferg,
Tim and Will J, RMB, Jah Harris and Leon Eru, as well as some 'wildcards'
like Remarks Terrain Park ranger Nick Rochester, and Canadian ripper
Dwayne who was stomping some of the nights cleanest switch frontsides
on the down rail.
Everyone had an hour to throw down, with the judges each choosing
a rail to mark on. And it was obvious everyone had warmed up throughout
the night in front of the 2000 strong crowd as the level of riding
was out of this world! But in the end it was the 'wildcards' destroying
it and taking home the cash prizes. Nick Rochester killed the ledge
with frontside 270 to frontside boardslide to 180 to boardslide
to 180 out. Josh Clark with a butter to switch 270 to 270 out on
the c-box. And Roland Morely-Brown on the down rail with butter
to backside 270 to 270 out. In the girls it was another Canadian
Leanne winning with nice frontside boardslides on the c-box, and
in the ski division Nick Draxl teched it up on the ledge.
All up the night was a great success and plans are already being
made for next year, there is even talk of doubling the amount of
stairs on the feature! Many thanks go out to NZSKI.COM, S&C,
Mission 6, and Redbull for putting on the sickest street jam Queenstown
has ever seen. Also special mention to Sam Deavoll and Lance Watson
for their time and skills in building the feature which will soon
be in place up at the Remarkables Terrain Park.
