Day 3, 540's Boarder X, Coronet Peak , September 7th
2000 Nationals and it is the weather that has become the major feature of this event. Again today competitors awoke to torrential rain down in Queenstown and the prospect of another day of Blizzard on Coronet Peak. Many anxious calls were made to event organisers in the hope of a lay day, but the decision was made to go ahead in this most rough and tumble discipline of the three day Nationals.
Progessively over the season Coronet Peaks Boarder X track has grown to epic if not down right intimidating proportions. Challenging at the best of times, but in near white out conditions and dumping snow with 5 other riders hell for leather on the same course it could only be classed as a day of survival of the fittest.

In true Boarder X form the early rounds proved the most brutal with full body armour clad riders fighting for the right to advance into the next round. Under the circumstances it is amazing major injuries were not a factor but a steady stream of knocks, bruises and the odd concussion kept things in perspective for the ski patrol. Local knowledge was a key factor in todays gruesome conditions, both the junior mens and junior womens divisions won by Coronet Team riders Joel Webb and Christa Woerlee.
The womens final was very hard fought with Kiwi world cup competitor Rene Hollis showing her great strength and local knowledge to blitz the other girls.
In probably the worst visibilty of the day the senior mens final was truely impressive. Blasting out of the start gate at 100% power the top class field of 4 N.Z and 2 Japanese riders attacked the course neck and neck to the finish. In true B-X drama, first across the line Adam Dyck of Wanaka was disqualified after missing a gate promoting Queenstown local Aaron Jamieson into 1st place. In 2nd place was local Glenn Howe proving with his consistant results over the last three days that he will once again take the overall combined N.Z Snowboard Title.
Hats off to all the competed today..especially the junious women it was way LOOSE!
